When I finally arrived to Merida the city did not disappoint, I must say that the downtown area was smaller than what I expected but it was very much alive with people walking, eating and celebrating different events. Since I arrived on the weekend the main Plaza was a true reflection of Mexican culture. Art vendors, foods of all types , aromas and performers all came together to represent that very Mexican essence of the main plazas across the country. As I kept on walking discovering the core of the city, I came across weddings, beautiful theaters, old universities, and families just enjoying their weekend. Merida is also home to one of the biggest and most regal avenues in Mexico…the paseo Montejo, that displays the wealth of the old hacendarios and their desire to display that wealth by building grand houses along this avenue. It is said that the objective was to replicate in some way those Parisian boulevards and you can argue that it might not be as grand but definitely it doesn't it does not disappoint and you will find many restaurants and stores along this paseo.
